When we face pressure and stress, it’s easy to default to reactive impulses. In these moments, everything can feel like it’s spinning out of control. In our CliftonStrengths program, one of the key “ah-ha” moments for leaders is the realization of the dark side of talent.
While leaders often embrace and celebrate their strengths, recognizing how these talents contribute to their success, we remind them that we are all human. The same strengths that propel us forward can easily turn against us if we’re not mindful, especially under stress.
For example, a leader with the Achiever talent may become overly pushy and demanding, focused solely on outcomes and neglecting the emotional well-being of their team. Conversely, a leader with Empathy might become so absorbed in the emotions of others that it clouds their judgment and impairs rational decision-making.
In a recent strengths-based leadership program for the executive team of a multinational client in the retail industry, we guided leaders to achieve a more balanced understanding of their talents—exploring both the bright and dark sides. This empowered them to lead with greater self-awareness and adaptability.
Special thanks to our dedicated consultants Edith Lam and Beryl Chan for bringing this program to life. Together, we are fostering an empowering team culture by helping individuals focus on what they are best at and passionate about.
