Do you find yourself experiencing more positive or negative emotions in the workplace?
Research shows that positive emotions contribute to our well-being, whereas unchecked negative emotions can have detrimental effects on our overall happiness and productivity. This highlights the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EQ), a topic that has gained increasing attention since Dr. Daniel Goleman's groundbreaking book on EQ was published in 1995.
Fast forward to 2024, nearly three decades later, and emotional intelligence remains a cornerstone of workplace success, both now and in the future.
One of my working partners, Pinky, possesses a remarkable talent for transforming the concept of EQ into a captivating and practical subject for learning. In a recent EQ webinar hosted with a local bank, Pinky emphasized that it's not the emotions themselves that constrain us, but rather the negative thoughts associated with specific individuals or events that continue to hold us back. So, how can we overcome this?
Pinky posed a thought-provoking question: "How long do you allow yourself to be affected by these emotions?" She shared a valuable tip for managing negative emotions: set a deadline for them. Allow yourself to feel and process these emotions, but commit to moving forward once the deadline has passed.
Throughout the interactive webinar, we shared with the learners various practical strategies for managing negative emotions and nurturing positive ones.
